Staves come in all sorts of varieties, so anything but the plain default one needs to be specifically blazoned.
Examples are Ragged, Palmer's (Burdon), Club/Shillelagh, Shepherd's Crook or simply Crook, Crozier or Bishop's Crozier,
Herald's or Ambassadorial Staff, Crutchstaff or Crutch, Jester's bauble and Wand (natural stick with leaf).
