A Canton means a 'corner' in French, and is a sovereign state within Switzerland. See Cantons of Switzerland

In the SCA a Canton is a sub-group of a Barony.

In Heraldry, the Dexter Chief corner on a device, smaller than a quarter shield.

Note that NONE of the Arms of the 25 Cantons of Switzerland HAVE cantons on them. Whether they have corners is not for me to research.

(Thanks Bjarni! For attending the Lobster Fest in Canton, CT!)
